Appropriately deemed Step Up, the building was designed to adhere to the strict zoning guidelines in the area by following the existing sloping terrain. Two levels, classified as basements, are the base to the upper floors that are exposed above grade. The sloping narrow lot presented challenges that were overcome through a carefully thought through design solution.
Nestled in the rolling hillside the home is designed for intimate use by creating unique, purpose built spaces on each level. An organic path along the side yard leads to a the quiet entry. Interior and exterior volumetric expression intertwine to form the home. A outdoor kitchen area, a pool and a front patio with views of the Santa Monica mountains are among the outdoor areas that are connected to the main entertainment area. Large operable glazing systems allow the interior to expand to exterior.
Each level of the house has a unique exterior space. As users move up, the views change from neighborhood views to rolling lush canyon and finally views of the Pacific ocean from the rooftop patio.
The exterior and interior of the home is crafted with natural materials to connect to nature. Light colored plaster is the field with dry stacked, dark stone and charred wood siding providing contrast and richness.
