Sierra Residence

Sited on a corner lot with north and east exposure to the street, the residence is designed to integrate into the streetscape while maintaining internal privacy. The double sided picketed fence along the property line and the vertical louvers blur visual lines while keeping the perceived concept of connection. The layout of the house takes cues from the irregularly shaped lot, skewing the geometry to leverage usable space and create dynamic moments at their convergence. The geometry reveals itself at the human scale within the home as well as in the massing of the volumes as viewed from the exterior.

Tonally warm plaster is the backdrop for the dark artisan brick, vertical hemlock siding and the rhythmic IPE louvers. The natural material palette softens the rigidity of the structure playing a key role to make the modern home comfortable. The rich materials flow into the landscape bridging the man-made and nature visually and physically. Natural light is embraced and allowed to engulf the interior through calculated openings at all stories via windows, skylights and lightwells.

Stepping over a reflection pond upon entry, the first impression is the perceived depth of the property from the front door to the rear yard. The ground floor is the entertaining level with slide away doors leading seamlessly to all areas of the exterior. From the great room, an exterior courtyard frames views toward the Hollywood Hills. An articulated second story volume hovers over a large portion of the courtyard that serves as the outdoor living room.

Living features are scattered throughout the property. From the daybed area at the foot of the pool and the bocce court along the side yard, to the to the private patio off of the primary suite and the wellness room in the basement, these carefully curated destinations bring comfort and livability to the home.
