Palos Verdes Estates
The intention with each design decision and material selection behind the PVE Residence is to epitomize quintessential California Coastal Living. Inspired by midcentury design principles, the PVE Residence is a modern interpretation of the classic post and beam home. Commitment to harmonizing with the neighborhood and regional context, the design blends current materials and modern detailing that resonates with both tradition and innovation.
Perched on the bluff overlooking a beach cove, the PVE Residence exposes its long elevation along the street frontage, offering panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean from within. Sustainable thermally treated wood and split-face porous stone adorn the exterior, creating a visually appealing texture. Horizontally articulated as a series of bands, each floor tells a unique story. The lowest floor, with the smallest footprint, anchors the house to the earth and is clad with split face porous stone. The second floor, housing the bedrooms, is covered with natural color wood siding and expresses itself as a linear bar. This mass floats over the terrain, reaching out to embrace the scenic view. The upper floor is seemingly transparent, featuring expansive glazing spanning from end to end. The ceiling of the third floor is lined in wood siding and is broken by a series of steel beams sandwiched with wood accents. The house is organized around these exposed beams that rhythmically repeat every nine feet. Picture windows punctuate the wood-clad facade along the second floor, creating a pattern suggested by the beams above.
From an experiential perspective, visitors are led to the entry door at the middle floor by exterior steps. Upon entry one is guided to a delicately designed staircase leading to the top floor. The entertainment floor is comprised of the great room, den, pantry, and powder room. From this story, the views are endless, showcasing the entire stretch of beach cities from Redondo to Malibu. The pool, situated along the rear retaining wall and is complemented by an outdoor dining area and lounge, seamlessly connected to the house through large sliding glass doors. The exterior materials are brought into the interior spaces where warm tones in cabinetry, flooring, and slab-work contribute to a cohesive and inviting atmosphere.
